movisensXS App Version 1.5

SensorTrigger functionality fully integrated in movisensXS

We're proud to announce that the sensor trigger for Experience Sampling and Ecological Momentary Assessment studies is now out of Beta. Now you can implement innovative research ideas by coupling one of our class leading activity sensors with movisensXS - our intuitive and comprehensive experience sampling platform - to capture truly insightful data.

Our research grade sensors analyze physiological parameters in real time and transmit the results via Bluetooth Smart. This allows individually configurable algorithms to trigger forms in movisensXS based on changes in physiology that the researcher wants to examine. By implementing one of our existing algorithms, the detection of physiological changes, such as high activity levels, sedentary behaviour, heart rate variability (RMSSD), and heart rate thresholds (among many others), can act as a trigger within your EMA/ESM study.

You have the freedom to select different algorithms for each individual participant, and also further customize the existing algorithms within groups. There's a range of existing algorithms developed for specific research projects that provide a small sampling of what is possible with this innovative technology.

If you have an existing algorithm that you would like to utilize, or an idea for a physiological marker that you would like to have as a trigger, we can work with you to implement this idea and develop your study.

Since the Beta we have added the possibility to skip the coupling of sensors when starting a study, allowing you to couple or re-couple sensors later.

If you want to use the movisens Sensor trigger feature please drop us a line under support@movisens.com and tell us the Email address of your movisensXS account so we can grant you access to the feature. The full documentation describing the features can be found in our docs website.

Improved wizard for sending debug information

In case a study does not run correctly on a particular smartphone you can send us debug information from the Settings Screen. It is now required to type some description of the problem. This helps us to spot possible problems and continue to improve the user experience for everyone.

More Improvements

  • Added Android 9 compatibility
  • Fixed bug with Android Oreo or higher where notification sound can't be defined after startup anymore
  • Added new dnd mode detection and prevention
  • Changed behaviour in case of unexpected app restarts, which occasionally caused studies not to function in some rare cases
  • Replaced Google Cloud Messaging with Firebase Cloud Messaging
  • Fixed problems with DnD mode permission not being available in devices
  • Fixed notification sound and channels with all different android versions
  • Fixed bug in mutable values if they start with a whitespace
  • Added possibility to disable the feedback for the cognitive Tests PVT and SART
  • Fixed smaller bugs

Improvements of beta features (available on request)

  • Changed Sampling Block "Log device running" to log every minute
  • Added new "One Of" block to select randomized actions like forms
  • Added possibility to analyze the results on an external server and trigger actions based on the analysis
  • Added "Multi Geofence Trigger" which allows the specification of multiple geofences in a csv file
  • Added "Log Static Locations" block and "Label Static Locations" item to record and label static locations of a participant during a study
  • Added new "Play Sound Repeatedly" item

The next app release

Warning: The next release will drop the support for Android versions below Android 4.4. We have to do this step to increase the security of the encrypted data transfer as recommended by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Please make sure that you finish your study on Phones with Android lower than 4.4 in the next month and upload all data from these devices before 01.04.2020 otherwise you are not able to upload the data any more. As always, let us know if you have any questions. Please spread the word and tell your colleagues about our great new features.

Capture the answers when it matters – SensorTrigger

Now it’s finally possible… capturing Experience Sampling data in sync with physiological parameters!

Previously discovering any relationships between physiological and subjective data would require cross referencing the information after the study. What if we said you can now detect heart rate and have it trigger a form? Or even psychological stress? Or you’d like to track Activity Levels? We’ve got you covered with that and more…

New white paper available

We've just added a few white papers to our website that we thought you may find interesting.

Energy Expenditure

First is a validation paper on the energy expenditure calculation of the Move II (now superceded by the Move 3). Some manufacturers are still utilising basic linear regression models to calculate the energy expeniture in their activity sensors. This paper demonstrates the advantages of utilising an activity class based algorithm vs. a basic linear regression to obtain a more accurate estimation of energy expenditure. It's somewhat old news, but it's good to remind everyone occasionaly of the superiority of our activity based method over the basic linear regression model.

White Paper Move II Validation Energy Expenditure

R-Peak Detection

Secondly we have a validation of the R-peak detection capabilities of the EkgMove (now superceded by the EcgMove 3). This paper puts the EkgMove through it's paces by introducing movement artefacts and validating the detection capabilities in reference to the Somnoscreen plus.

White Paper Validity of R-Peak Detection

Arousal

The measurement of arousal using Electro Dermal Activity (Galvanic Skin Response) is often hindered by factors like movement, temperature and exercise. This paper highlights the benefits of capturing activity data in addition to EDA/GSR. It details a method that can isolate the emotional arousal component of EDA/GSR using our EdaMove sensor.

Light and Activity Sensor LightMove 3

We took our acclaimed accelerometer technology and added 5 channels of light detection (Red, Green, Blue, Clear, IR) to develop our newest solution for ambulatory assessment:
Light and Activity Sensor LightMove 3

Capable of recording ambient light, 3D acceleration, temperature, and barometric air pressure data for up to two months, our sensor is ideal for research into the effect of light exposure and physical activity in the fields of:

  • Depression
  • Sleep analysis
  • Circadian rhythms
  • Shift work
  • Behavioral monitoring

Featuring:

  • The ability to easily calculate parameters like activity class, steps, energy expenditure, light irradiance or illuminance
  • Integrated Bluetooth Smart allowing live transmission of data calculated on the sensor

movisensXS Updates December 2016

We are happy to announce another huge update to the movisensXS Platform.

This update is all about the participant experience.
Please read the following changes carefully!

The update of the movisensXS app (Version 1.1) will happen tomorrow, 02.12.2016.
As always, if you are running a productive study, if possible, please disable auto-updates.

Participant Feedback about the Study Process

If you define a start and end date for a participant in a study the participant now gets feedback in the app showing him when the study will start and when it is ended.

This also helps to see if a smartphone is not performing correctly.

Improved margins when using images together with scales

When you show images e.g. above a likert scale with a "Multi Item Screen", the image is aligned to the buttons. We improved the margins of all items to line up nicely in a "Multi Item Screen".

User feedback when starting a large study

We improved the startup speed of a study tremendously. But apart from that we also included a loading screen if the start of the study takes a bit on older devices with large studies. It looks like the following (this is in slow motion).

Starting a Study in Slow-Motion

But there are even more movisensXS app improvements

  • Improved barcode scanner
  • Improved random time trigger to work in cases of restart
  • Decreased amount of permissions on startup
  • Improved margins for images and likert scales
  • Improved User Interface with consistent card buttons
  • Added Android Nougat (Android 7) support
  • Added indicator for study state at homescreen
  • Added a possibility to send log information to developer
  • Added indicators in WebViews
  • Prevent user from double clicking buttons
  • Back button now usable in informed consent
  • Automatic cancelling of concurrent alarms
  • Fixed various bugs

And some improvements of beta features

  • Added sampling nodes (notifications, sampling running, check mutable value action)
  • Added new items (offline video and timer)
  • Fixed null results at cognitive library items
  • Added movisens sync service to gather data from triggerapp
Get it on Google Play
